River Clwyd Salmon Season Extension

IMPORTANT NOTE:

IF YOU HAVE REGISTERED ON THE OLD WEBPAGE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO REGISTER AGAIN HERE

The River Clwyd & Elwy systems have been classed as ‘as risk’ due to dwindling Salmon catches in recent years. This classification was based upon EA migratory license catch return information gathered during the normal Salmon season of 20March to 17th October. Many anglers who fish the Rivers Clwyd & Elwy feel that the season ends too soon and due to many environmental factors, the Salmon are running later and later meaning the catch returns are not providing an accurate account of the Salmon stocks situation.

The Federation of Clwyd Angling Clubs put together a proposal to temporarily extend the season to the end of October. After a series of negotiations we were delighted to achieve a partnership agreement with the Environment Agency to establish whether or not there is a healthy run of Salmon after the normal season ends on the 17th of October.

What we really need to do now is actually all get out there and fish our socks off during the temporary extension period. If we can successfully prove what we are saying is true then the extension will be made permanent. However, to take part in the experiment you have to fulfil certain criteria, as follows:

The Rules:

1. Purchase a full season migratory fishing license — salmon license.
2. Be a member of one of the Rivers Clwyd or Elwy fishing clubs or syndicates.
3. Register on this website (The register link is on the left of this page)
4. The Environment Agency will process your application and send you written confirmation of your acceptance and we will issue you with your username and password to access the online logbook system on this website (See the Logbook link on the left of this page). Until you have received this confirmation it is ILLEGAL to begin fishing.
5. The allowed methods of fishing are spinning and fly fishing ONLY , no bait of any kind is to be used. We  prefer you to use barbless hooks at all times and avoid trebles.
6. For the entire period of the extension trial it is strictly 100% catch and release. This may change in future years but not for this trial, if a fish is badly injured or dies it still must be returned to the river. Additionally, any fish caught whilst spinning between 1st – 17th of October will also be subject to C&R.
7. Individual anglers MUST complete their statutory catch return as well as in the filling in the online logbook on this website, this is likely to be a condition of participating in fishing any future extensions to the season. If you do not submit your catch return to will harm the whole “experiment”. Please fill in your catch retun – the importance can not be too strongly emphasised.

Alternatively you can register and apply for a logbook by post, simply complete the application form attached to the bottom of the Federation newsletter (see the link on the left of this page) and posting to the address provided.
